Progressive Activist report

Taking a detailed look into the worldviews and attitudes of Progressive Activists, one of More in Common's seven segments, exploring what makes them different from the rest of the country, and why progressive campaigns in recent years increasingly seem to be backfiring.

In February 2025, More in Common published a deep-dive into our Progressive Activist segment. Funded by the Pears Foundation, this report helped a range of civil society actors and organisations better understand a segment that is outspoken yet out-of-step with the public in a wide range of social issues. In addition to disseminating the findings via multiple staff briefings in the charity and advocacy sector, the report received extensive media coverage spanning a wide range of outlets, such as the guardian, the daily mail and the spectator.

On social media, the report has been shared by dozens of leaders of charity and campaigning organisations. For example:

Chris Martin, Former CEO of The Mix Charity: “I’d advise anyone running a third sector organisation to review this report from More in Common UK. Progressive activists over index in our sector are often the drivers behind our mission. Understanding how they can be harnessed to work for rather than against organisational goals is an essential leadership skill.”

Dr Benjamin Ellis MBE, Various health charities: “An utterly magnificent report – a must read – if you: Care passionately about progressive causes; Are focussed on bringing about meaningful, lasting change in the world; Want to influence people who see the world differently to you. Game changing.”
