In advance of the launch of the Government’s Plan for Change, More in Common asked Britons about some of the key events and actions in Labour’s first five months in office – testing how much the public has heard about what the government has done and whether they view their actions positively or negatively. The research finds some of the government’s more popular policies have been overshadowed by more unpopular spending cuts and tax increases.
Given how marginal the new parliament is, Labour can’t afford not to increase its vote share at the next General Election.
Labour have promised change at this election, but our polling with UCL Policy Lab suggests that they won’t have long to deliver it before voters start thinking they have been let down. Given the rise of smaller parties, this could spell electoral trouble for Labour in years ahead.
More in Common’s polling finds that – while the public do intend to vote Labour – they feel pretty ambivalent about a Labour victory. Most of the public, in fact, would be happier to find a fiver on the street than for Labour to win.
